JBL Flip 3 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

JBL has a proven track record of making great products that won’t ruin your bank account, and when the JBL Flip 3 first launched it was just one more product to add to the list. The JBL Flip 3 portable Bluetooth speaker was released in 2015 and while there is a newer version, some people may still wonder if the Flip 3 is worth it.

While the new Flip 4 has a few extra features, is it really better than the Flip 3, or can you save a few bucks and grab the old model? Best JBL Bluetooth speakers can let you more ease in finding a correct decision.

What’s in the Box?

JBL has a pretty standard boxing process and that hasn’t changed between the Flip 3 and the previous version or any other JBL product. In the orange and white box, you will receive the Flip 3, a bright orange micro USB cable, and the guarantee and information booklets.

Quality and Design:

The quality of this speaker is really amazing. Maybe it’s because of its material. It compromises the fabric material and the sturdy rubber.

However, these two combinations make the product durable and able to withstand any kind of adventurous action. The design is similar to that of other JBL Flip series. There is initially a company logo on the front. However, the cylindrical shape of the speaker allows it to be conveniently stored or positioned.

It has rubberized material on top and bottom. So that it is easy to get up and down in both directions. There is a loop on the back of the speaker so that it is easy to carry when tied with the string.

At the back, there is an operating mode and battery indicator (you have to press for at least a second to switch on). On the side, there is a function key with which you can control the devices. Hence, the buttons are volume up and down, previous track and next track, and play and pause.

In terms of button placement, the Flip 3 has once again paved the way for the Flip 4 as they have almost identical buttons and functions. That said, it was different from the previous version where all the buttons were on the top (or on the sides, depending on how you orient the speaker). With Flip 3, they are integrated into the fabric of the speaker and also onto the hard plastic part on the back.

The Bluetooth pairing button, volume controls, and answer/end button are all on the side of the speaker and blend into the fabric. The power button and the JBL Connect button, which you can use to connect multiple JBL speakers together, are located along the spine.

The current version of this feature allows you to link up to 100 speakers together, but unless you have a lot of friends or a lot of money (or both) I don’t see many people needing to link more than three. Below are five small LED lights to show you how much juice you have left and below you will find the AUX input and micro-USB charging port under a sealed flap.

Battery Life

Another important feature when buying any type of device is battery life. In this case, JBL has improved the way they make or manufacture this Flip 3 Stealth Edition.

However, if we compare it to another version of the flip version, we can see a huge improvement. It comes with a 3000 mAh lithium-ion polymer battery.

It can give you around 9-9.5 hours of constant music. Because of this, you can get through most of the day without any problems.

Connectivity

It uses Bluetooth version 4.1. On the other hand, it has a range of around 25 to 30 feet, but it can be less or more.

What we don’t like is that it doesn’t have a built-in microphone. Because of this, you cannot make calls while connected. As mentioned by the company, you can easily switch between tracks and take a break, play music.

The controls onboard work just fine and people couldn’t even tell that I was talking to them using the built-in hands-free microphone instead of a phone.

The playback controls also work as advertised, so you can easily switch between tracks and pause or play music, which is quite a standard that has also found its way into the Flip 4 so that you haven’t missed too much anyway.

Conclusion

JBL has always had something good on hand with the Flip series, but apparently, they redesigned some aspects of the speaker that made the Flip 3 the start of a good cause. It was and is arguably one of the best under $ 100 speakers you can get.

The only problem is that the JBL Flip 4 is now available which has many of the same features and improves on the others (like a waterproof IPX7 construction). It also offers more punch in battery life and still manages to keep the price below $ 100. There are times when you can find the Flip 4 even at around $ 75, unless you can find a Flip 3 at a very low price, there’s really no reason to go for one.

In conclusion, we think the latest JBL Flip 3 has improved enough to deserve your attention if this is your type of speaker right now. If you’re looking for something with more water resistance, better battery life, and more performance, then you should check out some of JBL’s other portable Bluetooth speakers.
